fraud
From Black’s Legal Dictionary:
An intentional perversion of truth for the purpose of inducing another in reliance upon it to part with some valuable thing. … a false representation of a matter of fact, whether by words or by conduct, by false or misleading allegations, or by concealment of that which should have been disclosed, which deceives or is intended to deceive another so that he shall act upon it.
Many feng shui consultants prefer being frauds. How else to explain why publicity for most practitioners labels them an “expert,” even if their education and experience can be measured in minutes, not years.
Many consultants believe their own publicity, because that idea follows the New Age notion that they are creating their reality.
Some practitioners have invented their own history for feng shui (not tied to any evidence), along with their own philosophies, types, terms, techniques, and trinkets to sell as “feng shui.”
They are experts in rationalizing chicanery.
That is why you find so many feng shui people on the lunatic fringe. There is little public scrutiny and “respect for all ideas” (pseudoscience, urban myth, fraud) is the norm.
